Wedding Hit Records Publishes The Wedding Music Canon, the First Comprehensive Reference Work for Wedding Music Professionals
1,875 songs. More than 1,300 artists. Seven decades. Built for the people responsible for the dance floor.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada, September 15, 2026
Wedding Hit Records today published The Wedding Music Canon: The Best Wedding Songs from the 1950s Through the 2010s Organized by Decade and Genre, by Matthew Campbell. The 360-page reference work catalogs the songs that have defined wedding receptions across seven decades.
The Wedding Music Canon is a professional reference for wedding disc jockeys, planners, coordinators, and venues. It organizes 1,875 songs across more than 1,300 artists by decade and genre, and it includes a complete Artist Directory and Song Directory for use during client consultations and set construction.
Wedding music has never had a canon. Classical music has one. Jazz has one. Film has one. Wedding music, an industry that programs hundreds of thousands of receptions every year, has operated on personal crates, borrowed playlists, and whatever the algorithm surfaced that week. Professionals have had no shared vocabulary, no agreed body of work, and no way to explain to a client why one song belongs in a first dance slot and another does not. The result is a discipline with real craft behind it and no documentation of that craft.
The book resolves that gap with a two-door inclusion standard. A song earns a place in the canon either through significant chart achievement or by owning an under-served functional slot at a wedding. Chart performance alone does not qualify a song, and floor performance alone does not disqualify one.
The Wedding Music Canon also introduces Music Architecture, Campbell’s five-layer framework for evaluating a reception set. The five layers are Energy Architecture, The Certainty Crate, Crowd Coverage, Moment Matching, and Transitions and Cohesion. The framework gives professionals a structured method for judging a set before it is played rather than after it fails.
“Every wedding professional has a mental list of songs that work,” said Campbell. “Nobody had written it down. Not the list, and not the reasoning underneath it. This book is the reasoning.”
Campbell has worked in wedding music since 1993 and operates from Las Vegas, the destination wedding capital of the world according to Clark County Clerk records. He publishes The Wedding MusicLetter, a weekly newsletter for wedding professionals, and hosts The Wedding Songs Podcast, which has released more than 180 episodes and surpassed 95,000 downloads.
